"When You Know Better..."

Updated: Jan 27, 2021

- Hands down one of my favorite quotes.

Interestingly, over the past few weeks it's been coming up quite a bit in conversations & sessions. I recently shared with a client that while on my road trip I discovered, Oprah dedicates a whole podcast to this quote - sharing that it was spoken directly to her by Maya Angelou. (Pretty Cool!)

One of the reasons I believe it resonates with me is that - it speaks to me of my own evolvement - immediately giving the 'me' that stands here today the option of looking back at the 'me' who stood here two days, weeks, perhaps decades ago, with an eye of understanding, acceptance and ultimately compassion. Giving apermission that creates an opening to quickly, cleanly lighten the load & move on!

At times, when I am able to see into my own self-talk with clarity, I recognize the presence of self-judgement or criticism. (Anyone elsefamiliarwith this?)

These are the "shoulds" or regrets that often arise when something hasn't turned out as planned, or when I would have preferred that an event, experience or conversation togo another way.

It is during these moments that I find this quote especially helpful. Maya Angelou's words speak a truth that feels aligned with what I have actually come to know for myself:

We are all simply evolving, growing, changing - like any other life form on this planet - and we get to learn and adjust as we see fit at any point along the way. In fact, I believe that it is part of our purpose to do so.
